I wanted to introduce to you an old friend of mine, Hayley of Oak Design Studio. She is an interior designer and mum to a gorgeous little guy called Noah.
We met ..wow must be over ten years ago now when we were both studying interior design at the Enmore Design Institute. We were both driving up to Sydney from the Illawarra area so that was enough to get the conversation started and well, we have remained friends ever since.
Noahs’ gorgeous nursery was featured in Cosmo Pregnancy Magazine last year and I thought I would share it with you.
When it came to decorating the nursery Hayley had to remain patient as she didn’t find out the sex of the baby till birth. She says she has loved the Hampton’s styling for years and aimed it in that direction, with emphasis on a calming, light & natural look. She used light colours & subtle vertical stripes to make a west facing room feel bigger. You can see from the picture below that the stripe walls and the sleigh cot really make the room. Hayley was disappointed to find out that her dream cot had been discontinued but as luck would have it she found one on ebay. And at a bargain price..got to love that!
Hayley advises us to “mix it up with your bedroom furniture and linen, and not to buy the matching quilt, bumper, valance, sheets, nappy hamper, lamp, wall stickers….its all too much. She suggests you pick 1 or 2 items in the series that you like and use the colours and texture in it to match other items. She promises the effect will be much more pleasant and key items will stand out as they were intended”.
And another lovely idea…”Mix the old with the new and give the room a sense of family… if your family doesn’t have an heirloom piece to hand down why not create your own traditions. Buy something like Noah’s rocking horse that can be passed down, it doesn’t have to be super expensive, the idea is that it is priceless in sentiment. Perhaps use a old tapestry chair that your grandparents have hiding in the garage and get it reupholstered for the nursery, I bet it will have a good story to it. Nanna and Pop will be delighted that they have a special place in your little ones life, it will cost a whole lot less than a new one and give a special warmth to the room”.
These little hand and feet imprints are gorgeous and such a special memento, especially as you will never imagine that they were ever that small. Hayley and her business partner Casey also create these special keepsakes as a sideline. If you live in the Illawarra, southern Sydney or the Southern Highlands the girls will be able to visit you and create a special piece for you. Check out Birdie and Oak -Home and Baby here
With another bub on the way and due to arrive soon, Hayley has been working on a big boys room for Noah and will then be reworking her nursery..well how much depends on whether it is a girl or another boy. So we will catch up with her again soon.
