A Mountain Adventure nursery..

Mountain nursery adventure nursery baby boy nursery

Mountain Nursery

I’ve been loving the whole rustic adventure theme coming through in boys nurseries and bedrooms for a while and with the recent arrival of our first Mountain inspired range I thought I should put together a little inspiration board.

I think it’s a look that can be minimalist and monochrome or quite rustic with lots of textures.

I think you really must introduce some wood into the space..these tree stump stools or little tables are just perfect.  I think they look great painted too .

Our In the Wild Range features mountains, bears and arrows, all of which look fantastic mixed into this theme.

I’ve also put together a few boards on pinterest where you can find our sources and also other inspiration for your mountain adventure themed nursery or boys room.

You can find our pinterest boards HERE

Just FYI .. you can easily create a mountain feature on your wall like we did by using wash tape..or actually I’ve just done another using electricians tape in black..it seems to come off the wall easily without taking the paint off.. great if you are renting.

In the wild.. nursery board

Keep-the-Wild-Nursery

Hello friends,

Welcome to spring… or autumn..depending on where you are.

Firstly I have this super cute nursery board to share with you.  A friend alerted me to this the other week because it includes our Roary the Bear cushion so I headed over the Project Nursery to check it out.

Christy from Belle Studio created this board for her little boy whom she is expecting very soon.  She wasn’t sure which way to go with decorating ..loving both the woodland vibe and the monochrome (black and white) trend.  Since she was starting with a blank canvas of white she decided to combine the two and came up with the above board.

The strong prints and the black and white is softened by the introduction of the woodland stump.  I’ve seen a few nurseries doing this woodland trend and it can sometimes go a bit over the top with wood everywhere ..and then some monochrome nurseries look a bit stark and cold..but this is a clever compromise.

I also really love the colour palette which is a little like a combo I’m thinking of for some new designs next year.

So head over to Project Nursery to find out suppliers of the pictured products..well except Roary the Bear..you can get him right here 🙂

Trend Watch- Cactus

cactus trend nursery mood board by www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

You may have noticed the cactus trend growing as you see the motif popping up all over the place.. kids prints, cushions, clothing. Well its just a natural progression from the Mexican trend which is everywhere in fashion, interiors and even food.

I’ve always been a huge fan of cactus..of the living variety, and I actually still have a couple from the last time aztec and mexicana was all the rage..yes showing my age here.

So i thought I would pop together a bit of an inspiration design board that could be used for a nursery or a big boys room..and I thought our Ashkii pattern and colour way went with it just perfectly.

Creating a modern nautical nursery..

Modern whale nursery by www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

So with the arrival of the latest incarnation of our Moby Whale Nautical range I started thinking about how I would put it together.

Nautical vibes just never seem to go out of style for boys especially. Originally I tended to avoid these more classic themes as I felt that they were well covered by the main stream.  However over the years I have learnt that I have to not only look at what is trending in both kids and adult interiors, combine it with what inspires me but also listen to what my customer (you ) is asking for. And see if I can work it all together.

So with that in mind I have created our last range by taking on board your love of all things whale inspired and added a contemporary twist ..coastal style meets geometric cool.

Nautical style lends itself to so many different interpretations ..classic timber cots, coastal lime washed cots, simple white or grey is always a winner.  So whatever way you work it you can’t really go wrong. With my design board I’ve gone for the Incy Interiors Harry Cot because I just love that look of silver.  In fact I am a huge fan of mixing up textures and styles.  So I’ve mixed the casual coastal feel of the rattan chair from Family Love Tree and the jute rug from Freedom ..love the navy trim around it.

You could also mix in a rattan light shade and rustic storage or make the look more modern with a metallic geometric light shade. Ladedah is where you can find the crochet mobile as well as some other whale toys. And of course the geometric cushion and quilt is ours..you can see the range here.

I’ve also set up a pinterest board called Whale of a Time where you can find other whale inspired items to help you create your nursery..just remember not to have whale motifs on everything or it can get a bit much.  Choose just a couple to pop around the room for a more understated space.

Its up to you.. this is a starting point for inspiration.

Nostalgic toys – trend watch

alphabet monkey Arrow bedlinen with Sara Carr toy www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Ive noticed that crochet and knitted nursery toys has been a growing trend over the last few years and have often seen and admired the work of UK based Sara Carr whose quirky little creations have popped up in a many a nursery online.

I put the growth of this trend and its continued popularity down the notion that in todays digital world we all crave something more simple..from an earlier simpler time. This nostalgia makes us hungry for little reminders from the past.

So I couldn’t wait to order one of Saras’ creations for my new baby who will be here with us by the end of the month.  My son and I looked over her site and we chose this adorable little wolf.  And when he arrived I can tell you the quality and detail of this little guy was worth it.  So much so that at my sons insistence we ordered the larger orange fox for him which we had passed over earlier.  He loves it and has been sleeping with it ever since..

So I made up an ‘Into the Woods’ nursery board with a black and white scandi edge..a perfect little nursery to add your little wolf or fox to.  It features our Arrow bunting, quilt and teepee cushion which can all be found in our online shop.

Sheepskin from Ikea, Oeuf Sparrow cot in birch from Urbanbaby, Replica Eames Rocker from Matt Blatt.

And as I mentioned earlier, crochet is also very big.  I happened to receive this cute bunny all the way from Spain from super cute Marigurumi Shop on Etsy.  I highly recommend you check out her shop if you are looking for a unique baby gift.

Brave Arrow Nursery

brave moodboard ..new range by alphabet monkey.com.au

I just wanted to do an update on the Brave Arrow Indian nursery range.  It has been a very popular design..probably because of the current trend for black and white nurseries as well as it’s simplicity.

Ashkii /Brave SS14/15 by Alphabet Monkey www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Our quilt is back in stock as pictured here..black on the front with white with black arrows on the back.  The Arrow cushion and the sheet are expected to be back in stock this month sometime.

And in other news I am testing samples in grey and white too so I’m hoping to add those to the Arrow range in the next few months.

Below is a sample of a cot sized quilt cover which we will also have arriving soon.  Perfect for that stage between a cot quilt and moving into a big bed.  Enables you to pop an insert inside for the cooler weather.

Baby Cot Quilt covers in arrow print by alphabet monkey.com.au

And like our Single bed quilt cover it is also reversible.  this one features the Little Teepee with Tree print on the reverse side. It is piped around all edges and our fabrics are screen printed by hand onto a beautiful soft quality poplin which washes up beautifully.  And best of all the blacks are strong and true and don’t fade after a couple of washes..a problem I had previously found with other fabrics and printers.

And of course our popular Ashkii single bed quilt cover set will be back in stock this month too so we will let you know when it is.  Featuring the black arrow on one side and the modern Teepee Triangle geometric print on the other.

Trend Watch; Metallics and Copper

Metallic touches in the nursery www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Ok so metallics have been popular for quite a while now as we have discussed previously..many of the coolest interior trends are tending to seep into the coolest nurseries and kids spaces too.

Ive always been a fan of silver but the latest gold, copper and bronze offering give us an opportunity to create something different.  the most popular way to introduce metals into kids spaces seems to be through wall decals/stickers and through lighting.

Metallic touches in the nursery. www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I have seen many gold and copper nurseries over the last year and they have tended to be very feminine and frilly affairs so I was pleasantly surprised to find these more unisex and boyish options for you to be inspired by.

This rose gold Ellie cot by Incy interiors has been styled in a decidedly unfeminine way which is great to give you inspiration..especially with the mustard (another up and coming colour).  I think most people would tend to automatically picture this cot in a girls pretty nursery so it was very clever of them to show it here in a different way.

Metallic touches in the nursery www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I love the simplicity of this delicate looking copper mobile (below).

I’ve most commonly seen copper/bronze paired with pinks and corals which I do love, but how great does it look with these mint and aqua tones.

Very fresh and the metallic touches lift the simplicity of this room.

We might do another post soon of some of the more feminine metallic rooms too..I may need to create one for myself…

And so I’ve put together a little inspiration board of products that can help add that little metallic touch to your nursery.  I have already got my eye on a few of these pieces for my new nursery.

Little Indian Nursery…

Little Indian nursery by alphabet monkey.com.au. Cool bedding for little boys.

Hello again,

Today I have put together a little nursery collage cause I haven’t done one in ages. I’ve mixed up the Ashkii range with some great other nursery products to create the Little Indian Nursery.

You may notice that gorgeous emerald green metal cot  by Incy Interiors featuring front and centre.  It’s the latest colour in their metal range arriving in September.  This only confirms to be that we are definitely yet to see more of this vibrant shade in kids interiors yet.  Emerald was the Pantone colour of the year in 2013 and I was actually surprised that I didn’t see all that much of it around.  Especially in interiors .  But as I predicted it is creeping in more and more this year in both fashion and interiors and I think that as mums tire of black, white and yellow ..they will move onto this fresh colour.

You will find our Ashkii linen available in our online store here.  The good news is that it may be here as early as next week.. a bit earlier than anticipated. We have already had such an overwhelming response to preorders from those of you who don’t want to miss out and we will have them posted off to you as soon as they arrive.

The super cool ‘Wild and Free ‘ print is from our friends at  May and Belle  , I have it in yellow but I’ll have to get the green now.

That gorgeous hand made timber feather mobile is from Etsy at The Red Bird shop

And the super cute paper cutout Teepee wall art is from Piccolo Studio

Finally… New range sneak peek

brave moodboard ..new range by alphabet monkey.com.au

Good morning all and happy monday…

I’m very excited to present to you our next two mood board for our coming India style ranges…Ashkii and Brave.  There are many pieces that can either work together or work alone.

In fact , when I look over what we have designed and ordered I think wow..so many designs and options. No wonder it has taken so long to sort out!!  These ranges will be produced in extremely limited runs of 12 at a time.

So my inspiration for the Brave range has been to take the vibe of the American Indian trend and translate it into pieces that will look great in any space.     I’ve worked  in the arrow motif into an understated monochromatic look for those of you who love the minimalistic look or you can add it into the colour and astern of the Askii range below.

Ashkii (which means Boy in Navajo) is inspired by the colour and pattern.  And we are featuring a rich green and mint for those looking for something new.

We have collaborated with talented illustrator Pete Cromer ,  who sketched our super cool teepee design.  We love this sketchy free hand style and think it works very well in our new pieces.

Ashkii and Brave are both inspired by and made for little babes and boys who are free spirited and full of energy.

Who love to play make believe in the forest or in their makeshift teepee.

Who want to chase and roll and throw things and explore.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTS..

Our patchwork quilts will now come in the boori size as the standard size.  At 100x140cm we know you will get maximum use out of your quilt and I also think this is a great size to then use as a throw on the single bed.  We will have two styles of single bed quilt cover and matching pillowcase  and they will be reversible with cool prints on both sides (one in Storm range and one in the Ashkii/Brave range).

All our quilts will be larger than our current sizes and our fitted sheets are big enough to use on a boori cot or a standard cot so we hope we can keep more of you happy.

I am also excited about the patterned fitted sheets as I feel that it is great to be able to have the sheet be such a feature..especially when we don’t use the quilts for sleeping when they are so young (Check SIDS recommendations in your country)

I know many of you have boys that share rooms so the range will be able to be used on both cots and single beds..and you can mix in a pillowcase or a cushion here and there with what you may already have to create a coherent look in the room but that doesn’t have to all be identical.  And before you ask about king singles or doubles..no we can’t accommodate those sizes due the fabric width and printing restrictions.  So our primary focus remains on the nursery but we are allowing some options to assist you in transferring to the big bed..

I have learned over the past nearly four years of creating and growing Alphabet Monkey is that my mums and mums to be are very design savvy.  They love to invest in quality, cool design and they like to get a bit creative when putting their children’s rooms together.  I like to think that we can give you access to designer items that can be worked with in many different ways so that every little boys room is as unique as they are.  We encourage you to mix items we have with things you already own or go all out and get the full range and your little guy is set for years to come.

We will be doing preorders in June..stay tuned or keep up on Facebook.

Stormy Range..It’s back

stormy moodboard

Well we have been waiting long enough for the return of the Stormy range.

It’s been a favourite with mums wanting a super cool look for their little guys nursery,  so you will be glad to know the waiting is almost over….

I’ve set up the Stormy range on my new website available for pre orders.  We will be doing the new photography when they first arrive in early june but you could expect to get your items by late june.

I wanted to wait for the new photography but it seems many of you are happy to proceed so you don’t miss out on the first drop.  Although we have gone into a partnership with a small workshop  in Indonesia (actually run by an Aussie), we are only producing very limited runs of 12 of each product to start so this is no means mass production.  This has enabled me to offer more products and prints , as well as keep the highest quality.

We have fitted sheets, bunting, organic wraps, cushions, single bed quilt set, two styles of cot quilts which are all bigger sizing than we have currently been doing.

If you would like to check it out head over to my new site , http://www.alphabetmonkey.bigcartel.com
