Pinterest Pick; Herringbone Walls

pinterest pick; patterned walls www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

After much procrastination I think I have finalised my own nursery design and I’ve decided to do a wall similar to this.  I did have visions on creating a geometric colour block wall (I’ll have to show you this trend in another post) but I have decided on creating this herringbone feature wall.

I have loved this look since I pinned the image below which is where I first saw this done and I think it is very striking. This would have to be one of my favourite nurseries.. I think the herringbone pattern is a good alternative to a straight chevron which although we may be tiring of, still seems to continue in popularity.

You can find these images and their sources on my girls nursery pinterest board here.

Cool art prints..introducing Pete Cromer

SafariniPrint

Today I’m so happy to introduce you to Melbourne based designer/ illustrator Pete Cromer .  Pete has recently quit the security of working for big name companies and is out living the dream of working for  himself. And it looks like things are going pretty well so far with one his prints featuring on the Design Files last week.

I discovered Pete last year on instagram , and one of his sketches convinced me that he was the right person to redesign our brand logos aka particularly Maxie the Monkey.  He did such a great job and understood just what I was after.  And Pete has also contributed some illustrations to be featured in some of our upcoming ranges this year which I just can’t wait to share with you.PegasusPrintWingsPrint

I bought for my studio the one above..’Love Ya Guts ‘ it is called.  So funny. I was just taken by the feeling of love that is portrayed through these little blobs.  All prints are limited edition signed prints and available through his website here.

I love the fun and freedom of his illustrations and I also feel that many would be brilliant additions to a nursery or children’s room. I have used the print below as a starting point for a nursery.  I think these works are so great in that they totally can suit someone of any age and they will be able to grow with your child because they aren’t too babyish. What do you think??

Trend Watch..the cross blanket

pia wallen swedish cross blanket

I am seeing scandi inspired crosses everywhere these days. And particularly the blankets.
I thought I’d do a bit of digging to find out a bit more about these blankets and also find out where you can snap one up.

They are the work of swedish designer Pia Wallen who is best known for her high quality felt products and in particular her Crux blanket featuring the cross.

The cross is a symbol of hope in the Swedish folk arts traditions and so it seems fitting that the blanket has become a symbol of all things scandinavian.
It was first introduced in 1991 and is made by a small swedish mill where they use traditional weaving and felting techniques along with the highest quality wools.

The ‘Crux’ blanket is 100% wool and was both expensive , limited and highly sought after.

In response to this, Wallen released the ‘Cross ‘ blanket in 2011. It was created to offer a more accessible version but maintaining the design integrity of the original. This version is 100% cotton and made from ecological cotton from Peru. The main visual difference is that the cross is slightly smaller. This may explain its’ renewed popularity.

Although we are talking of this as a  trend it really has a much more enduring quality as a symbol of scandinavian design..so if you do pay out the big bucks for the Crux you can be sure it will never really go out of date, especially if you are a scandi design junkie.
