In the wild.. nursery board

Keep-the-Wild-Nursery

Hello friends,

Welcome to spring… or autumn..depending on where you are.

Firstly I have this super cute nursery board to share with you.  A friend alerted me to this the other week because it includes our Roary the Bear cushion so I headed over the Project Nursery to check it out.

Christy from Belle Studio created this board for her little boy whom she is expecting very soon.  She wasn’t sure which way to go with decorating ..loving both the woodland vibe and the monochrome (black and white) trend.  Since she was starting with a blank canvas of white she decided to combine the two and came up with the above board.

The strong prints and the black and white is softened by the introduction of the woodland stump.  I’ve seen a few nurseries doing this woodland trend and it can sometimes go a bit over the top with wood everywhere ..and then some monochrome nurseries look a bit stark and cold..but this is a clever compromise.

I also really love the colour palette which is a little like a combo I’m thinking of for some new designs next year.

So head over to Project Nursery to find out suppliers of the pictured products..well except Roary the Bear..you can get him right here 🙂

Trend Watch ..stars

Nest Design Studio - Lane Nursery 9[7]

Nest Design Studio - Nursery Interior Design[5]

I wanted to share another trend I’ve been noticing and this gorgeous nursery by Belinda from Nest Design Studio is a great example.

I know the use of stars isn’t a new thing particularly in boys nurseries and rooms, however this trend is definitely not the red, white and blue, nautical inspired look you are used to.  Its more about space (outer space that is) and tapping into the current interior passion for the use of metallics.

It certainly fits in with and follows on from the use of clouds in nurseries..we are seeing more little stars mixed in and moon faces. As well as an emerging trend for the use of constellation type patterns and vintage maps of the sky.   You can see more of this trend on my ‘stars and constellations ‘ board on pinterest here

Pinterest Pick… a dash of red

val1

val2

With it being Valentines Day and all I thought that todays’ Pinterest Pick would obviously need to have a dash of red.

When I first began Alphabet Monkey in 2010 I used a lot of red.  Nowadays I don’t really use much at all.  I think that other colours are more in the spotlight these days as far as interior trends go however red really is a staple of boys nurseries and bedrooms.  For that reason , it is usually a key part of most stores offerings when it comes to boys, along with navy blue.

I even used this combination for Campbells’ room at one stage cause I just loved the Sprout fabrics. (Unfortunately they are no longer in production)

I must say that these two nurseries do it so well by adding just that splash of red with the cots and pairing with greys and patterns that are very contemporary.

PS if you are after a red cot I did see a very cool sneak peek from Incy Interiors at the Life Instyle trade show . So head your enquiries that way.

You can find these pictures and their sources as well as more cool nurseries on my pinterest boards.

Trend Watch …. TeePee Fun

teepee1

With our new limited edition Indian Summer range launching this Sunday I thought it’s time to really start looking at this whole American Indian style trend.

It is evident in many areas in both fashion and interiors..from aztec motifs, arrows, geometrics, feathers, hunting etc.  I thought  we would look at how it is being interpreted into our children’s interiors over the next month starting with teepees.

So firstly I thought I’d group together some Teepee inspiration for you as they are so fun.  You can buy them , make them, make a rough one from sticks and blankets…it all depends how adventurous and creative you are feeling.

And the best thing is that there are so many ways to use them for both boys and girls.

teepee2

These gorgeous interiors are so simple yet stunning with a scandinavian edge.  The natural colour palette makes it a stylish look for any gender neutral nursery.

And look at how simple the tent above left is ….just hanging a sheet over a string..perfect fun.

teepee3

One of the coolest things about the teepee is that it makes you think of camping.  Set one up outside on a sunny day and lay inside reading while the kids run around playing.  Have a picnic and play some outdoor games..I’m sure that little girls will just love those pretty little tents for their own little private picnics.

I have also noticed they seem to be popular with adult styling for parties, picnics and events, so don’t think that its just for kids.  There are more pics in my Teepee Pinterest board.

teepee4

Or if the weather is not so great, why not venture on an indoor camping safari.

And as many parents have done..just add one to the play room or the nursery as a key style element ..that the kids will actually love too.

I’d love to have one but Cams’ room is just too small for it.  I have gathered plenty of examples for you for both boys, girls and also some inspiration for Indian styling on my pinterest board, Teepee and Indian Styling.  You should find plenty of ideas for creating a room with an Indian vibe…and don’t forget we will have lots of new products for you launching on sunday.  You can check out our pinterest board here.

All these lovely images have been taken from my pinterest board where you can find all the sources and links if you would like to find out more.

If you are keen to get your hands on one, I would check out Etsy first as they always seem to have everything cool don’t they.

Modern Tribal Nursery…new arrow cushions

teepeeyellow

Morning everyone, just thought I would pop up a few pics of my new arrow cushion covers.

I just listed them in my etsy store yesterday and both the yellow and an aqua teepee print quilt is now also available in store.
Black, grey and yellow are totally happening for boys rooms right now and its very cool for nurseries too.

You can mix these in with some other graphic cushions and add to some simple black, white or grey bedlinen if your little guy is already in a big bed as this print is not currently available for a single bed.

yellowaztec

This softer pastel version in teal, aqua, mint , yellow and grey is just perfect to mix with the Yellow aztec quilt. But as I mentioned earlier these colour combinations allow you to mix them in with so many other quilts too. You can expect to see a lot more in this Indian tribal vein as we get set to launch the Indian Summer range next month.

You may also have noticed that we have had a little bit of a facelift. It’s been three years since I started Alphabet Monkey and things have changed so much I thought it was time for a freshen up. I hope you like our new little funky monkey..he is actually inspired by one of Campbells’ favourite toys, Maxie.

Things have been quite hectic that I had planned to do a post for our birthday and look back on the changes that have happened but right now with so much exciting stuff going on , I think I’ll save that story for another time.

I am off on a sourcing trip to Indonesia tomorrow so I will hopefully have lots of exciting news when I return but as always I will be spamming everyone on Instagram so please feel free to join me there to follow my adventures. You can find me here.

Modern and Simple Nursery….yellow and blue

I just wanted to share this lovely nursery which I found on the Nest Design Studio blog.  I thought you might like to see how the design board was translated into an actual room…oh and it does also include an Alphabet Monkey quilt too.

Nest Design

And so it went from this lovely board …..to this fantastic room…..

It’s a lovely simple and modern room isn’t it?

I do actually have just one of those yellow chevron quilts left in my store if you want to snap up the lucky last one.

Single Bed Quilt Covers

So I have finally listed some single bed quilt cover options due to popular demand. I have stuck with cot sizes but as your little guys grow you are coming back wanting quilt covers. Which is of course so lovely!!!

So I decided to offer them on a pre order basis and they are only available in my own exclusive designs. This way you really do get something unique. The fabric is printed up especially for you in the USA, in the colour and design of your choice. The pattern fabric is a soft organic cotton sateen which has a lovely look to it.

Note..the cloud print would actually be smaller than shown.

I am more than happy to say that I am glad to be able to offer these to my loyal customers who appreciate quality and uniqueness. But unfortunately due to the cost of printing fabrics in small amounts I won’t be able to offer them on a wholesale basis to the many lovely stores who have requested this type of thing.  But hey , that won’t effect you or me will it??

What I have learned over this past few years is that you..my lovely customers, really do value the idea of connecting with someone and something handmade this way. Knowing who made it..where it came from…. And you also value new, fresh, on trend design. These two points are at the heart of what I create as I move forward.

Circus Trend

Have you noticed circus motifs popping up everywhere…I have noticed especially a vintage circus vibe used often in kids fashion, products and interiors.

vintage circus

I was given this vintage look circus print fabric by a friend and thought I might just incorporate it into the elephant quilts. I feel like this would mix in well in the sort of nursery with a lot of mismatched vintage and recycled pieces.

I think that an understated circus vibe would be so great for either a girl or boy and I would definitely recommend searching on etsy for vintage circus toys or posters to add a little special touch.

I have put together a circus inspired pin board on pinterest with lots of circus inspiration as well as circus nurseries too. Oh and some really gorgeous modern wallpapers too.
You can check out the Circus Trend board here as well as find the sources for all images used.

Black and White Nursery Trend

One thing that has really changed when it comes to creating nurseries and kids rooms is that people have become more accepting of using black.
What do you think of this??

I really like this but I am a fan of having a graphic base like this and adding in plenty of texture and colour. And really, kids toys are just so colourful they become the key injections of colour in the space anyway.

bw1bw2bw3b:wbedblack and white kids rooms 4

This minimalist scandinavian inspired style is so very popular for adult interiors that it is natural that the look has crept into childrens spaces.

I think it looks best with a mix of some texture and some natural finishes like some timber. It also looks great with vintage pieces and I will show you some more colourful vintage styles next week.
It is quite distinct and it is so interesting how nurseries differ around different areas of the world. For example I find that American nurseries always seem to have a lot of soft furnishing and upholstered pieces and everything is layered and matching.  Sometimes to the extreme.  I will do another post showing some examples.  I don’t really know if us Aussies have a distinctive look , what do you think?

You can check all kinds of nurseries and kids rooms on my pinterest boards.

I would encourage you to feel free to mix things up a bit when decorating, recycle things, repaint furniture mix and match fabrics..but most of all make it yours.

pinterest pick… Quatrefoil nursery Trend

pinterestpick

So the geometric trend continues and just evolves into different shapes. The name of this pattern is quatrefoil..apparently. I didn’t know so I thought you might not know either….

This was one of my favourite nursery pins this week..the strong colour and pattern just struck me.  I do love the wall because to me it reminds me of moroccan tiles and I just love moroccan design.
