Black Nursery Inspiration

Black nurseries www.alphabetmonkey.com.au #blackwall #blacknursery #boysnursery

Since it’s Black Friday…I thought we should take some time to think black in the nursery.

When I first started Alphabet Monkey in 2010, black was a colour I started adding to my designs as mums were looking away from traditional colours. And today..well I think we all know the monochrome trend is huge.

But are you brave enough to actually paint a wall black? Especially a nursery wall?

Check out these gorgeous  examples and I guarantee you will be won over with black feature walls in the nursery.

The dark colour actually has an effect of receding so it looks further away creating an illusion of more space..not closing it in as some people may assume.

White and colour really pops against this deep base.

How pretty yet minimal is this space for a little girl..it feels far from stark.

Black nursery Inspiration www.alphabetmonkey.com.au #blacknursery #blackwall #blackfeaturewall

I personally think the rooms with timber and textured rugs are my favourites..it really create a lot of interest against the strength of the black base.

So, what do you think?

Have I won you over?

Although pastels are trending again in nurseries,  I don’t think black is going anywhere soon. You could also do a similar style with navy which could work equally well in boys or girls spaces.

Nursery Trend .. Tribal Rugs

Nursery Trend - Tribal Rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Have you noticed that the trend for tribal inspired rugs in the home has crept into the nursery?

No ? Well that’s ok because that’s what I am here for…. to bring you the latest insights into nursery and interior trends.

A few years back all the most stylish nurseries were featuring stripes, chevron, quatrefoil, triangles in coloured flat weave rug designs.  But now there has been quite a big shift from the use of geometric style rugs to more heavily patterned styles with a more bohemian or tribal  edge.

This bohemian aesthetic can be done in many ways and in combination with many popular nursery motifs so let’s check out a few.

The first example above is a classic way to use tribal rugs and that is to set it as a contrast against a white wall. In fact you will be hard pressed to really find any that aren’t in neutral environments. This allows you to add in more pattern or interest and it can all pop against the neutral surrounds.  However I really think they would AMAZING against a coloured room or wall that was colour matched from one of the rug colours.  But you would need to be a bit braver.

Nursery Trends- Tribal Rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Moroccan rugs are very popular and traditionally every region was known for its particular colours and patterns.  Now however they are often made to order with current colour trends in mind and have become a real statement piece for the home.  I love the boho vibe in the space above with its cute teepee and the soft natural colours of the rug, don’t you?

Nursery Trend - Tribal Rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

In this example , the rug is called a Boucherouite rug and they are usually one of a kind vintage recycled fabric rugs made by the Berber  women in Morocco. They weave wool and fabric together to get that ribbon look.  You can find so many brightly coloured versions of these and they remind me a bit of those rags rugs I used to see around as doormats when I was younger…but nicer of course!

Nursery Trend - Tribal Rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I do love the dark base of this one which really grounds the room and gives quite a different look.  I guess thats part of the appeal of these rugs, they are usually unique and so it gives the room a touch of difference and the colours tie in with all the coloured items that kids tend to accumulate ..so it can be stylishly messy which as we know kids rooms often are once the actual baby comes along.

Nursery Trends - Tribal Rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Ok so this one has been huge in interiors for a while, due to the blend of its understated look, simple geometric lines, the fact they are black and white and also tribal.  Its called a Beni Ourian and they usually have a bit of a shag like pile.

Their minimalistic look can fit into many nursery styles or themes creating interest with its texture and understated pattern. As shown in the nurseries above and below.

Leos nursery by Nest Design Studio.. www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I just love the colours in this Aztec rug below. From Mexico they traditionally feature golds, rusts and reds but now makers are adding vibrant modern palettes and its made them irresistible for contemporary homes.  This style with its large geometric patterns is also a great match when decorating in the South Western style as the Americans call it, you know like an American Indian or teepee theme as we in Oz would think of it.

Nursery Trend - Tribal rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

And last but not least another strong geometric design to ground a South Western desert, Boho kinda vibe.

These rugs are also referred to as Kilim rugs as they are pipeless, flat woven , hand woven traditional rugs..many like this originate in Turkey or in nearby countries.

Nursery Trends - Tribal rugs www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

And looking back over the photographs you may have noticed another 2 trends..

  1. Its been going strong for a while and I see no end in sight as our love of exotic rugs grows… yes it’s the leather Moroccan pouf or footstool.  Perfect for the nursery as you feed baby or really for any room in the house.  I remember haggling to buy one in morocco years ago and our escape from the evil clutches of the rip off merchant is something we still laugh about today..but yes thats another story.
  2. Fiddle leaf figs and cactus..or in fact any plant pictured in interiors.  Indoor plants is a massive trend being revived from the 70’s but well when you see them in kids rooms and nurseries just remember they are really only there as a styling aid..that dash of greenery just lifts the photo. But seriously I don’t think anyone is really keeping these in a kids room. Especially once the baby can crawl.

So in conclusion I think these tribal rugs look awesome .. and they are really the ultimate gender neutral essential.  If you start googling them you will just go crazy at all the choices but I have put a lot together for you to see on a Tribal Rug Trend pinterest board.

Of course they are expensive for the real thing due to the hand woven nature of them but if you happen to collect one on your travels it would be something you would keep for life. It would be able to be used anywhere in your home  and it would be an amazing memento of your travels.

Of course as always happens when something is on trend , a thousand imitations pop up so you can get the look without the price too.

So that wraps it up..I hope you have been inspired by this nursery trend update and you can find more  nursery images and trend boards on my Pinterest page here.

All images and their sources can be found on my Tribal Rug Trend Pinterest board.

Leos’ serene gender neutral nursery

Lets nursery by Nest Design Studio.. www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I have been wanting to share this gorgeous nursery space with you cause I just know that there are so many of you who keep the sex of your bub a surprise and you might be needing a bit of extra inspiration.

This simple and serene space was designed by Belinda Nihill for her third baby, Leo.  Belinda is the owner and creative genius behind Nest Design Studio and I’ve been lucky enough to have become friends with Belinda and watch her business blossom.

Lets nursery by Nest Design Studio on the blog at www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

You may even recognise this room if you follow my instagram as lovely Belinda has also put her styling and photography skills to work and we have lots of beautiful images of our products styled in this space.

That is part of the beauty of this space..its versatility.  It’s bang on trend with the moroccan rug, natural leather and wooden touches, metallic accents, a must have cot from Incy Interiors.  But Belinda has a way of blending these fashionable elements and creates a special space with a timelessness about it.  It doesn’t feel trendy but it is definitely on trend.

This is what a talented interior designer can bring to the table.

lets nursery by nest design studio as featured on www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Belinda says that she has designed each of her boys rooms as a challenge… a way to showcase new looks and of course her design skills.

She was wanting something gender neutral but didn’t want to go down the monochrome path as she had already done that with her older boys space… we will share that another day.

www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au Leos nursery feature by nest design studio

The box is a find from their farm which had their surname and year of marriage added.. adding such personal touches makes it really special.

www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au ..nest-design-studio-leo-nursery-childrens-interior-design

I personally refer to this type of look as upmarket safari.. a more sophisticated twist on the more traditional nursery theme.  I also really love the little lion accents with his name being Leo.

The room is also peppered with lots of handmade touches from small online and instagram businesses.

www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au ... nest-design-studio-leo-nursery-childrens-interior-design-2

Belinda admits that the room has been a bit of a splurge but insists each piece was worth it, especially her nursery chair.  The only item she thinks she won’t be reusing elsewhere in her home when it comes time to redecorate is the cot.

www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au ... nest-design-studio-leo-nursery-childrens-interior-design-15

In her own words ” It really is a room that is a joy to be in. When I sit in the chair and nurse Leo , I think I let out a little sigh every time because of the peace and the calm of the space.”

And isn’t that what we all want our nursery to feel like. A little sanctuary for us to bond with our little one.. a special space to share during that tiny window of time when everything else fades away and its just you two.

In the wild.. nursery board

Keep-the-Wild-Nursery

Hello friends,

Welcome to spring… or autumn..depending on where you are.

Firstly I have this super cute nursery board to share with you.  A friend alerted me to this the other week because it includes our Roary the Bear cushion so I headed over the Project Nursery to check it out.

Christy from Belle Studio created this board for her little boy whom she is expecting very soon.  She wasn’t sure which way to go with decorating ..loving both the woodland vibe and the monochrome (black and white) trend.  Since she was starting with a blank canvas of white she decided to combine the two and came up with the above board.

The strong prints and the black and white is softened by the introduction of the woodland stump.  I’ve seen a few nurseries doing this woodland trend and it can sometimes go a bit over the top with wood everywhere ..and then some monochrome nurseries look a bit stark and cold..but this is a clever compromise.

I also really love the colour palette which is a little like a combo I’m thinking of for some new designs next year.

So head over to Project Nursery to find out suppliers of the pictured products..well except Roary the Bear..you can get him right here 🙂

We love this mix of geometric patterns modernising the traditional nautical look.

It’s so easy to work a nautical nursery so many different ways. This modern concept is all about pattern and colour but still mixing the good old shades of blues, navy and grey which are at home in any boys nursery.  Pair it with white furniture for a light bright feel or go more rustic with weathered timber styles.

Mixed below with one of our custom name cushions in navy..you can personalise you little ones space.

6 Miffy kids spaces I love..

Miffy nursery I love www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

When it comes to bunnies, my favourite has got to be Miffy.  If you have somehow managed to live life this far and not know who miffy is… she is a little rabbit character created by Dutch artist Dick Bruna to entertain his son in the mid 1950s.  she has grown in popularity around the world ever since.

So I’ve gathered 6 kids spaces I love that use Miffy products.

It appears that any self respecting scandi space really MUST have a Miffy lamp.. they come in two sizes and the larger size is just huge…as seen above.

Pinterest Pick; Herringbone Walls

pinterest pick; patterned walls www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

After much procrastination I think I have finalised my own nursery design and I’ve decided to do a wall similar to this.  I did have visions on creating a geometric colour block wall (I’ll have to show you this trend in another post) but I have decided on creating this herringbone feature wall.

I have loved this look since I pinned the image below which is where I first saw this done and I think it is very striking. This would have to be one of my favourite nurseries.. I think the herringbone pattern is a good alternative to a straight chevron which although we may be tiring of, still seems to continue in popularity.

You can find these images and their sources on my girls nursery pinterest board here.

Trend Watch; Metallics and Copper

Metallic touches in the nursery www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

Ok so metallics have been popular for quite a while now as we have discussed previously..many of the coolest interior trends are tending to seep into the coolest nurseries and kids spaces too.

Ive always been a fan of silver but the latest gold, copper and bronze offering give us an opportunity to create something different.  the most popular way to introduce metals into kids spaces seems to be through wall decals/stickers and through lighting.

Metallic touches in the nursery. www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I have seen many gold and copper nurseries over the last year and they have tended to be very feminine and frilly affairs so I was pleasantly surprised to find these more unisex and boyish options for you to be inspired by.

This rose gold Ellie cot by Incy interiors has been styled in a decidedly unfeminine way which is great to give you inspiration..especially with the mustard (another up and coming colour).  I think most people would tend to automatically picture this cot in a girls pretty nursery so it was very clever of them to show it here in a different way.

Metallic touches in the nursery www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I love the simplicity of this delicate looking copper mobile (below).

Metallic touches in the nursery . www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I’ve most commonly seen copper/bronze paired with pinks and corals which I do love, but how great does it look with these mint and aqua tones.

Very fresh and the metallic touches lift the simplicity of this room.

Metallic touches in the nursery. www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

We might do another post soon of some of the more feminine metallic rooms too..I may need to create one for myself…

And so I’ve put together a little inspiration board of products that can help add that little metallic touch to your nursery.  I have already got my eye on a few of these pieces for my new nursery.

Yellow Elephant Cot quilts

Yellow Pachy Elephant quilt by Alphabet Monkey

Morning,

I restocked the store with some more of these yellow and grey Pachy the elephant quilts and thought I had better let you know as they may be the last for the year.  The trend for yellow and grey in the nursery seems to be as strong as ever..it really is a great gender neutral choice. We have looked at this cute colour combo before here and here.

I am planning to do some more in the blue and grey in the next couple of weeks however after that I really need to start packing up my sewing gear to make room for the nursery for the new baby.  The need for nesting is totally kicking in.  I’ll share some of my nursery ideas and inspiration here too.

Im starting to get the aches and pains of pregnancy so I’m going to be on the machine less but we will also soon have our new Elephant range in mint and grey arriving.  This will mark the changeover between me sewing them and having my Indonesian co-op create them for me.

This will allow me to continue creating new designs for you a while while I tend to baby number two.  My goodness…its coming up so fast!!

Yellow Pachy elephant quilt by Alphabet Monkey

And we also have these cute little elephant toys and bunting ready to go with it.  You can also find we have some grey chevron fitted sheets and lumbar cushions that will also compliment the range if you were looking for extras.

And just a reminder that our Pachy elephant range in mint and grey will be arriving in December. We have already sold half of our quilt stock so if you hanging off till they arrive don’t wait too long.  They are currently available for preorder in our online store.

PS I’ve also set up a new code for those of you wanting to buy a package deal…..just enter code ‘SAVE10’ at our checkout and you will save 10% off orders over $350.

Elephant Nursery Range

Pachy elephant nursery range by Alphabet Monkey, www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

I wanted to share with you the lovely new photographs of our upcoming Pachy the Elephant nursery range in mint green and grey.

They are currently available for preorder and are proving quite popular so far.

The photos were taken for us by local photographer Jade Flores of Jade Flores Photography. Jade is very clever and specialises in portrait photography.

Pachy Elephant Nursery Range by Alphabet Monkey, www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

As you can see the quilt is a generous size tucking right down on a standard size mattress..but it should be great for a boori size also but just not tucking down quite as far.

Pachy Elephant Nursery Range by Alphabet Monkey, www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

The range includes the quilt with our signature hand stitched felt appliqué elephants.  The inner is 100% natural cotton and has a lovely drape.  It has a little more weight in it than dacron or polyester type batting but I think it actually feels a little more substantial and adds to making a high quality product.  That is why I’ve stuck with it instead of switching to cheaper options..I think you will feel the difference.

Pachy Elephant Nursery Range by Alphabet Monkey, www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

So other items in the range include the patch cushion cover, the chevron cushion cover, the bunting flags, the little elephant toy buntings, the hand made elephant toy and it also matches with our grey chevron fitted sheet which coordinates with all our current ranges.

Of course all these items are also available individually.
