We love this mix of geometric patterns modernising the traditional nautical look.

It’s so easy to work a nautical nursery so many different ways. This modern concept is all about pattern and colour but still mixing the good old shades of blues, navy and grey which are at home in any boys nursery.  Pair it with white furniture for a light bright feel or go more rustic with weathered timber styles.

Mixed below with one of our custom name cushions in navy..you can personalise you little ones space.

Creating a modern nautical nursery..

Modern whale nursery by www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

So with the arrival of the latest incarnation of our Moby Whale Nautical range I started thinking about how I would put it together.

Nautical vibes just never seem to go out of style for boys especially. Originally I tended to avoid these more classic themes as I felt that they were well covered by the main stream.  However over the years I have learnt that I have to not only look at what is trending in both kids and adult interiors, combine it with what inspires me but also listen to what my customer (you ) is asking for. And see if I can work it all together.

So with that in mind I have created our last range by taking on board your love of all things whale inspired and added a contemporary twist ..coastal style meets geometric cool.

Nautical style lends itself to so many different interpretations ..classic timber cots, coastal lime washed cots, simple white or grey is always a winner.  So whatever way you work it you can’t really go wrong. With my design board I’ve gone for the Incy Interiors Harry Cot because I just love that look of silver.  In fact I am a huge fan of mixing up textures and styles.  So I’ve mixed the casual coastal feel of the rattan chair from Family Love Tree and the jute rug from Freedom ..love the navy trim around it.

You could also mix in a rattan light shade and rustic storage or make the look more modern with a metallic geometric light shade. Ladedah is where you can find the crochet mobile as well as some other whale toys. And of course the geometric cushion and quilt is ours..you can see the range here.

I’ve also set up a pinterest board called Whale of a Time where you can find other whale inspired items to help you create your nursery..just remember not to have whale motifs on everything or it can get a bit much.  Choose just a couple to pop around the room for a more understated space.

Its up to you.. this is a starting point for inspiration.

Whale quilt is back..

moby whale range www.blog.alphabetmonkey.com.au

When I first started Alphabet Monkey nearly five years ago I made a whale quilt.  Little did I think that all this time later that I would still be getting requests for it.  I guess a nautical vibe in the nursery never goes out of style.

There has been many incarnations of that original whale quilt and now we are bringing it back with a fresh geometric edge.

This item has been handmade to my design specifications by my fantastic sewers in Indonesia. Our fabrics are screen printed by hand with environmentally safe seaweed gels from Japan.

Our quilt has a layer of cuddly 100% cotton batting sewn in-between the top patchwork layer and the bottom fabric layer.  What makes this a true quilt and not just a blanket as such is that it is then ‘quilted’ together..which means it is sewn around all the squares and borders holding all three layers in place.  You will feel that this has a slightly heavier feel than some quilts..it allows it to feel cuddly and settle around your body.  We prefer this natural batting to synthetic ones as it allows it to breathe avoiding that sweaty feeling.

You can find out more about our processes and our products on our About Page.. we hope this helps explain how we make and price our product.

We expect the whale quilts to arrive in late April so we have opened up preorders.  I’m sure as usual this will be a popular choice.

On the sewing machine…blue whales and more clouds

Ive had a few enquiries about the blue whale quilts that i used to have in the shop these last few weeks.  Well the navy whale fabric is now all gone but I have been sewing a new version which I think is just as cute and thought I’d better give you all a sneak peek since so many have been asking.

And while we are at it..here is the heads up on the first cloud quilt using my own little cloud print fabric. Its a mix with chevron and spots and in everyones favourite colour combo..or so it seems…grey and aqua. It is one only right now but i think i will get some more fabric as I’m pretty happy with how its coming up. And as i have just gotten in a whole lot more grey spot fabric i am also looking at doing some more grey and white cloud quilts….so now you are up to date ( well pretty much..I have to keep a few tricks up my sleeve don’t I)
